Poke Bonnets were very popular from 1797 until 1815/20 and then the fashion met with a resurgence in the 1840s.

This particular bonnet is a copy of one from 1807.  The Georgian/Regency Poke Bonnet was very straight in its profile and there was very little gradient in the size from back to front.  It also had a round tip.

However the 1840s Poke Bonnet had an oval tip and there was a definite change in the size from the back to the front as it belled out towards the face.

This bonnet is made in soft pink with cream coloured edging and cream coloured ribbon.  Little cream coloured 'lozinges' are also decorating the front.  The lining is of ruched cotton lawn and you will see that it has a single ribbon wrapped round to hold the hat on the head, tied with a bow on the lefthand side.
